This one-day excursion from Hanoi takes you into the historic heartlands of the Red River Delta to explore the centuries-old Buddhist sanctuaries of Thay and Tay Phuong.
You will then discover the historic village of Duong Lam, celebrated for its paved lanes and traditional residences crafted from red laterite stone blocks. A delightful pastoral escape blending cultural immersion, leisurely cycling, and ancestral Vietnamese architecture.
Morning departure from your hotel in Hanoi with your French-speaking guide and private driver heading westward into the countryside. Your first stop is dedicated to Thay Pagoda, built at the base of a limestone hill and linked to the memory of the revered monk Tu Dao Hanh, followed by Tay Phuong Pagoda, celebrated for its extraordinary 18th-century master-carved jackfruit-wood Buddhist statues.
Continue toward the ancient village of Duong Lam and its central hamlet of Mong Phu. Discover the peaceful atmosphere of this Red River Delta village, characterized by golden-brown laterite brick walls and curved terracotta roofs, and step inside a preserved 17th-century courtyard residence to meet the welcoming homeowners.
The afternoon unfolds with a walk and leisurely bicycle ride along village lanes to admire the historic village gateway, the majestic Mong Phu communal house, sacred Mia (Sugar Cane) Pagoda, and the ancestral shrines dedicated to national hero-kings Phung Hung and Ngo Quyen. Return by vehicle to Hanoi in the late afternoon.
Driving time: approximately 2 hours round-trip (90 km / 56 miles).
Travel Log
Selected moments to experience the landscapes, encounters, and rhythm of this itinerary.
