Hotels in Hanoi, Sa Pa, and Ninh Binh
Carefully selected boutique hotels offering modern amenities and prime locations for urban touring and mountain relaxation.

In Hanoi, artisan guild streets and traditional water puppetry open this eight-day journey across Northern Vietnam. An overnight sleeper train then whisks you toward the northern mountains: around Bac Ha, scenic walking trails link rammed-earth homes, cultivated valleys, and minority villages, followed by a warm dinner and homestay overnight with a Tay family. Sa Pa unfolds on foot, from the lofty heights of Hang Da and Sa Seng to the cascading rice terraces of the Muong Hoa valley.
Descending back toward the delta plain, the landscape shifts in scale and mood. In Ninh Binh, admire Tam Coc from atop Mount Hang Mua, then glide on a traditional sampan along the serene Ngo Dong River. The journey culminates in Bai Tu Long Bay, in the Halong region, with a memorable overnight cruise aboard a traditional junk. This route blends cultural discovery, mountain walks, and serene coastal navigation at a dynamic, fulfilling pace.
Your French-speaking guide welcomes you upon arrival in Hanoi and escorts you to your downtown hotel. Depending on your arrival time, your first stroll leads to Ly Thai To Square and Hoan Kiem Lake. Ngoc Son Temple and the evocative silhouette of the Turtle Tower introduce the legend that anchors this lake in the capital's heritage.
On foot and by cyclo, plunge into the vibrant Old Quarter, where historical guild streets preserve the names of their ancestral crafts. A visit to a preserved Mã Mây tube house unveils the narrow, deep architecture unique to traditional Hanoi residences.
Overnight at hotel in Hanoi. Room check-in from 14:00 according to hotel policy.
At the prestigious Temple of Literature, discover Vietnam's first royal university and the Confucian civil service examinations that shaped generations of scholars. Next, visit Ba Dinh Square to view the Presidential Palace grounds, Ho Chi Minh's stilt house, and the colonial-era avenues.
In the afternoon, tour the renowned Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, whose rich indoor and outdoor exhibits showcase the architecture, costumes, and rituals of the country's 54 ethnic groups—essential preparation for your mountain days ahead.
In the evening, attend a charming water puppet show, where lacquered wooden figures dance across a pool to live traditional music. Transfer to Hanoi Railway Station to board the overnight sleeper train to Lao Cai.
Overnight on the Hanoi–Lao Cai sleeper train in soft-berth compartment.
Arrive in Lao Cai early in the morning and meet your local team. After breakfast, drive up into the dramatic mountains of Bac Ha. Your guided hike begins through pine groves toward Ngai Phong Cho, a quiet hamlet home to Flower Hmong and Phu La families living in earthen-walled houses.
Continue along mountain footpaths overlooking terraced valleys toward Thai Giang Pho, known as the "Valley of Flowers", and Na Lo, populated by Tay and Black Hmong communities. If local distillers are active, observe the traditional process of brewing corn and rice wine.
In the late afternoon, arrive at a traditional Tay wooden stilt home. Share a convivial dinner prepared with fresh mountain ingredients and enjoy a peaceful night immersed in rural village life.
Driving time: approx. 2h30 from Lao Cai to Bac Ha. Dinner and overnight homestay in Bac Ha.
If your travel dates coincide with market day, your morning is dedicated to a vibrant weekly ethnic market in the Bac Ha region (such as Bac Ha, Can Cau, Coc Ly, or Sin Cheng). Villagers in dazzling hand-embroidered clothing gather from surrounding ridges to trade water buffalo, horses, textiles, and mountain produce.
Afterward, journey westward across dramatic passes toward Sa Pa, nestled under the towering Hoang Lien Son range. East of town, hike through Hang Da and Sa Seng, remote villages where Black Hmong communities tend terraced rice, wild indigo, hemp, and cool-climate crops against monumental rock faces.
Driving time Bac Ha to Sa Pa: approx. 3 hours. Overnight at hotel in Sa Pa.
Embark on a magnificent walking stage through the celebrated Muong Hoa Valley, where cascading rice terraces ripple along mountain contours as far as the eye can see. The trail connects Y Linh Ho and Lao Chai, Black Hmong hamlets, before reaching Ta Van, home to Giay families residing in wooden riverfront cottages.
Along the way, your French-speaking guide explains agricultural techniques and seasonal tasks. After lunch, begin the overland drive back to Hanoi via the modern expressway, crossing scenic northern foothills.
Return overland drive to Hanoi: approx. 5 hours (300 km). Overnight at hotel in Hanoi.
Depart Hanoi for Ninh Binh, often celebrated as "Halong Bay on land", where limestone karsts rise dramatically out of emerald rice paddies and winding rivers. In Ninh Xuan, climb the stone steps up Hang Mua Peak for an astounding 360-degree panorama over the Tam Coc river valley.
Afterward, cycle through peaceful rural lanes in Tam Coc past lotus ponds and sleepy hamlets. In the afternoon, board a traditional hand-rowed sampan along the Ngo Dong River, gliding through three natural limestone caverns carved beneath towering cliffs.
Driving time Hanoi to Ninh Binh: approx. 2 hours. Overnight at hotel in Ninh Binh.
Drive eastward to the coast and arrive at the harbor in the Halong region. Step aboard your traditional wooden junk and meet the crew before sitting down to a fresh seafood lunch as the vessel glides into pristine Bai Tu Long Bay, where thousands of sculpted karst islets rise from tranquil jade waters.
Explore the illuminated formations inside Thien Canh Son Cave, then cruise toward Cap La for a kayaking outing and refreshing swim weather permitting. In the evening, enjoy a sunset cooking demonstration of fresh Vietnamese spring rolls on the upper deck, followed by a gourmet dinner and peaceful night at sea.
Driving time: approx. 3h30 (180 km). Lunch, dinner, and overnight aboard the junk in Bai Tu Long.
Greet the dawn on the upper deck with a gentle tai chi session as mist hovers over the karst towers. The junk continues sailing toward Vung Vieng, a picturesque floating fishing community nestled inside an enclosed lagoon, visited by local bamboo rowboat.
Savor a farewell brunch aboard as the vessel navigates back to port. Disembark around midday and transfer directly to Hanoi and Noi Bai International Airport for your departure flight.
Driving time to Hanoi Airport: approx. 3h30 (180 km). Onboard brunch and airport transfer included; no extra night in Hanoi.
Travel Log
Selected moments to experience the landscapes, encounters, and rhythm of this itinerary.
